Tips On Finding A Hosting Service For Your Business Website July 25, 2008

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 7:32 am

There are so many hosting companies offering to host your website for you that the choice may seem a little bewildering. If you are determined about having a successful internet business then you need to consider seriously which hosting company you are going to use for your website. It is almost expected nowadays that a company should have its own website, no matter how basic, and web site hosting has become an exceedingly competitive area. That is good news for any website owner because the amount of features offered by any web hosting service has increased while the costs have decreased. The only problem you might have is trying to decide which hosting service you want to trust your business with. Every business has its own different needs and it is important to weigh up the options that each hosting company you are considering actually offers.

Before you start checking out your hosting options it is important that you are clear about which services you want your hosting company to provide. Obviously you wouldnt want your website to only be online Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. It is likely that you may be considering a hosting company based in your own country so that you can contact them easily but that is no longer necessary. Website hosting are located all over the world these days and it is often much cheaper to select a company based in another region if they offer 24/7 cover should your website have any technical problems.

The resources that you require from your hosting service will vary greatly depending on the functionality you want included in your website. For example, a purely informational website needs much less bandwidth from the hosting service than a website that is constantly being updated. The more interaction that you have on your website means that you require a greater bandwidth from your hosting company to work. If you do not have enough bandwidth then your website is likely to collapse as the volume of visitors to your site increases. This obviously leads to a higher cost for the website hosting service and a higher requirement for technical expertise from your hosting company. Online transactions or streaming media files on a website require more storage space on the hosting server too.

Some hosting providers will offer a private, or dedicated, server rather than one shared with other businesses if you have dynamic web pages and a lot of interaction for your visitors. A shared server is a more cost effective solution than a private server and may be enough to get your website off the ground but you are likely to have to migrate to a dedicated server with your hosting company at some point so make sure that they offer this service. The inclusion of automated systems by your hosting service is also a consideration to ensure that your business website is still online no matter what time of the day or night it is.

Security is becoming an extremely important issue due to the amount of hacking and viruses that attack websites on a regular basis. You have to be sure that your hosting service has all the latest defences in place on their web servers to prevent your website from being targeted and possibly destroyed. These include anti-virus and firewall protection. The more protection that your hosting company uses as standard the better.

The personal data that your customers supply when using your website is also subject to strict privacy laws and needs to be protected at all times. This necessity increases greatly if you accept payments on your website by credit card, online check or an electronic transfer. Your chosen hosting service has an obligation to ensure that all data taken from your customers via your website is totally secure. This also applies to the secure storage of backups that are taken of your website by the hosting company in case of severe server problems.

Unlimited Bandwidth In Web Hosting July 7, 2008

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 10:22 pm

Bandwidth explained:

Bandwidth is the amount of data transfer that you are allowed to have for a hosting package i.e. Lets say you have a web page that is 48KB in size, now each time a user opens your site and goes to that page S/he downloads 48 KB of information on to their computer. If a 100 users view that page one time each then there has been a total of 4800 KB of data transferred from the server on which your files are stored for the computer of users.

Size of web Page: 48 KB
Number of users who viewed the web page: 100
Total amount of data transferred: 48KB * 100 = 4800 KB

Bandwidth is the term that is used to denote the amount of data that has been transferred from your web space.

The amount of bandwidth that you require while choosing a host depends on two factors:

> The size of your site.

> The popularity of your site.

If your site is not very huge and you do not have any audio/video downloads and its not very popular i.e. not a lot of people visit your site then you do not really require a lot of bandwidth, on a average a web site uses up only 500 MB of bandwidth per month. Or if your site is small but extremely popular then you might have to go for a web hosting package that offers high bandwidth.

On the other hand if your web site is huge, providing audio/video downloads, as well as being very popular then you would certainly require a huge amount of bandwidth. Lets say you have a video file that is 150 MB in size and in a single day a 100 visitors download the file. This means that 15 GB of bandwidth will have been used. If you multiply that by 30 days for the month it comes to 450 GB.

The unlimited bandwidth controversy

For some time now a lot of hosting companies are supposedly providing unlimited bandwidth for their web hosting packages.

Its absolutely true, you can have unlimited bandwidth. However, you will need an unlimited amount of money by your side! Jokes apart, if you ever come across such a host it would be best to turn around and run back the way you came from.

Just think, if you can get unlimited bandwidth for $25-30 a month then why arent big companies like Sun, Microsoft etc. not hosted there? In fact, why isn’t everyone hosted there? For that matter, if unlimited is a standard feature then why dont all the hosts offer it? Is it because it is expensive and requires better hardware? No, its because some hosts are honest and dont give in to such gimmicks.

Statistically speaking, a T1 Internet connection (huge broadband) equals approximately 500GB per month and costs around $1200 per month. So how can it be possible to get the same or unlimited for $30 a month?

There are a lot of ways you can be duped by these unlimited hosts; here are just a few of them:

The secret of unlimited is actually buried in the Terms of Service by the host. Do not be surprised to find that unlimited = 15 GB.

The host may restrict the sort of files that you can host on their server. Generally image galleries and audio/video files attract a lot more downloads thereby resulting in higher bandwidth consumption. So if there are no files of this type, your site wont really require a lot of bandwidth.

Some newly opened hosts use it as a scam. They take your money and after a few months when their server starts to become slow or reaches its limit, they run with your money!

Some hosts outline in their Terms of Service that you can have unlimited bandwidth as long as you qualify for it. i.e. Your site must use less then, lets say 2 GB of bandwidth in order to qualify for the unlimited bandwidth feature. As soon as your site goes over that limit they either start charging you for it or cut off your downloads altogether.

In life its a universal truth that you always get what you pay for, and its no different for web hosting.

If a host is using a cheap advertising gimmick like unlimited bandwidth they maybe lying about a few other things too. Their dedicated support team could be a single person (the hoster itself in most cases) sitting in front of a computer and taking your calls.

Do you really want unlimited bandwidth hosting from hosts that have very limited resources at their disposal? Or, do you want to go for a host that has spent thousands of dollars on setting up a good network infrastructure, servers, and a highly qualified and dedicated support team? The choice ultimately is yours and yours alone.

The Top 15 Essential Ingredients Of Every WINDOWS HOSTING Plan (Package)

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 4:47 pm

First things First. Why would you like to have Windows Based Hosting when there are Linux packages for cheaper rates ? The answer is it depends on what application you are looking to use for your hosting. Consider the tools and scripting languages you plan to use if you use PHP, Perl or MySQL, Linux is the way forward. If apps are Microsoft-specific, then Windows is what you need. Clear?

Now lets proceed with the essential ingredients of any Windows Hosting Plan.

1.ASP Support The clear reason why you chose a windows plan is to use Microsoft Specific Languages. Active Server Pages, Microsoft’s technology to enables HTML pages to be dynamic and interactive by embedding scripts. Check all the windows hosting plans and make sure, the host doesnt charge for this extra.

2..NET Support ASP.net is the next generation of Microsoft’s Active Server Page (ASP), a feature of their Internet Information Server (IIS). ASP.net is different from ASP in two major ways: it supports code written in compiled languages like C , Visual Basic, and Perl, and, it features server controls that can separate the code from the content, allowing WYSIWYG editing of pages. Most of the hosts give this feature free of charge while few charge extra. Go for it if you really need it.

3.CDONTS - CDONTS stands for ‘Collaboration Data Objects for Windows NT Server’ and its a Messaging Component comes along with Windows NT/2000. A windows hosting plan without this is Incomplete. This provides you the easiest solution for your messaging thro your website ASP pages, provided you have SMTP support.

4.DATABASES Microsoft Access 2000 Database is supported by all the windows hosting plans. This will do if you are a starter. For experienced campaigners, MS-Sql is a must have. This is an advanced feature and most of the hosting companies charge extra. The control for the Databases must be provided in the Control Panel. Check that.

5.DATABASE Connection DSN or DSNless Connections, whatever the case may be, please check if the host has provided the option in the Control Panel to create/manage DSNs. (Data Source Name). If DSNs are NOT allowed, ask for the Connection String for DSNless connections.

6.ASP Components Apart from the default components, there are loads of third party software. Check the list of such components that the host provides. ASP Upload, ASPImage, Dundas Mailer, ASPjpeg, ASPEncrypt are few popular components. At times you may require to have your own components (DLLs) installed. This is provided by most of the hosts, but after the DLL undergoes a complete test in the server environment. This does not come free.

7.PHP & Coldfusion ColdFusion is a server-side scripting language web development tool. It uses HTML-like tags called CFML to enable back-end ODBC database connectivity as well as data manipulation and validation within webpages.. This is again an advanced option and NOT every hosting provider provide this. But PHP, Mysql is also bundled with windows hosting plans. Keep an eye on both of these.

8.Control Panel This is the nucleus of your website. In a Control Panel, popularly known as CP, you can literally do anything. The moment you signup for a Hosting Pack, you must be provided with a CP to manage your webspace.

9.POP3 email Ids & Aliases - yourname@yourdomain.com is an example POP3 ID. You must be provided with ample of POP3 email ids and it depends on the Package size.

10.FTP Account This is where you upload your files, delete them, update them. This again comes along with the CP.

11.Backup Most of the Hosts take Automated Backups. But users do not take much care on this while choosing the Hosting Pack. This feature is as essential as anyother in this list.

12.Web Statistics - Analysis of your website visitors plays a key role in the success of your website. Say, your website has been launched and you get NIL Visits or More than 100 Visits per day. Whatever the case may be, you can view the Report using Statistics Application that run in the server backend.

13.Bandwidth Choose the Hosting Plan that gives enough Bandwidth for your website. Even though you cannot judge at the beginning, as time progresses, you can easily deduct the Bandwidth required.

14.Webmail, SMTP & SPAM Email becomes key part in your life once you launch the website. Check if the Hosts provide with WEBMAIL (mail.yourdomain.com) to check your mails thru a web based interface using Squirrelmail or Horde. Corporate Users prefer downloading mails thru Email Clients such as Eudora or Outlook Express. Only if SMTP or IMAP support is enabled you can use this option. Hence check if SMTP support is provided. No email user is free from a spam attack. Hence you need to have Spam Filters installed on the server where your website resides.

15.IP If your website prefers SSL Support (https://) as time grows, makes ure you get a DEDICATED IP. Most of the websites are hosted on shared IPs. Ask your Hosting Provider about the extra charges involved in getting a dedicated IP and SSL Support. Note : For SSL (https://), you need to buy a Digital Certificate.

Why A Dedicated Server May Be Better

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 4:47 pm

Now, don’t get me wrong, I think shared and virtual server hosting is great. I have a virtual hosting account with a provider, and a standard shared hosting account on another. I have also had access to a dedicated server numerous times. But what’s all the fuss about dedicated servers?

Dedicated resources is a major reason. Not having to share any processing speed, any memory, hard drive capacity or network speed with anyone else (in other words, having it all entirely to yourself) sounds pretty good. Shared hosting accounts can sometimes go onto a server where there are hundreds if not thousands of other accounts. This isn’t a bad thing, but if someone is abusing the service, everyone suffers. If you also wanted to run a special application or internet service, chances are you wont be able to. With a dedicated server, you can.

Your own IP address. For the uninitiated out there, an IP address is like your server’s internet phone number. It is what other computers use to call your server and talk to it. If you wish to run an ecommerce store on your website, you will need an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer a layer of encryption for protecting your personal and credit card details when making a purchase online) certificate. But personalised (not shared!) SSL certificates require an IP address. Sure, it is possible to get an IP address for SSL on a shared hosting account, but usually it’s quicker and easier to do this on a dedicated server.

Dedicated servers normally cost a bit more than a shared hosting or virtual server account, but the benefits you receive in return far outweigh any disadvantages. You only have to decide if a dedicated server is really suitable for what you need (don’t buy it unless you need to!) and/or if you can afford to keep it. Make sure your dedicated server comes with a flexible contract, or short contract that only lasts a few months at a time. This allows you to take advantage of any discounts and price drops that your provider introduces that you may not be entitled to on your current contract. The downside to this situation is having to remotely back up all your data in the event that you decide to move your business elsewhere. Talk to your provider about flexibility and their ability to accommodate your changing needs over time.

But if you play it well, a dedicated server will be the best internet purchase you could make. Or it could be a waste. Stick by these few simple guidelines to decide if you need one before rushing in. When you are ready, it’ll be there waiting to serve you.

Choosing A Quality Web Host

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 4:46 pm

If you are anything like me, youd probably like to have a website on the Internet but you just have no idea how to go about it. All this talk of web hosting, bandwidth, disc space, and other jargon can cause one to say, This is too complicated and technical, I just wanted to have a place to put all of my favorite skateboarding photos, cool information on ramp designs, and the best places to skate! To get a website on the Web you have to go through a web host. The question is how do you find the web host for you? If you type web host into your search engine like Google you will get thousands of sites. Hit on one of these and like any product on the market you will see all sorts of persuasive propaganda to incite you to use their company; that is if you can decipher any of the technical jargon that only computer-heads can comprehend. Some web hosts offer free business cards with an account; some probably offer free watcheslike all consumer industries you the buyer must beware. Im a writer so Ill use the analogy of a writers journal. The journal I like must not be too big or small in book size. It also must have a good amount of space allocated to each day, again not a whole page but not just a few lines. Of course I also want it to be cheap but of a good quality that wont fall apart while Im using it, and I hope it would last for posterity. I just want the diary, some nice pictures in it are O.K. but unnecessary especially if it adds to the price. Its the same with a web host and web site scenario. You want to get the right deal for you, enough space and enough access to the public that you wish to associate with. As a novice who doesnt understand all the jargon this can pose a problem. Are you an individual, small business, blog, or a big time corporation? What do you need and how do you get it? As far as I can tell the web hosting business is a lot like the fast food business. The big corporations have strict guidelines, will offer you special deals, and have monthly cheeseburger specials. But, Ive always been more interested in the Mom and Pop small time diners who have that real caring human approach. You know you are a customer and a person, not just a number on a sales receipt. I believe the hosting companies are the same. A smaller hosting company will probably treat its users with more honest integrity as well as having more flexibility in dealing with your individual situation. They can often tailor web site packages to accommodate exactly what you are looking for as well as the ability to update them quickly when your needs change. My advice is to contact a few of the smaller companies. Look for ones with good reputations or just arbitrarily email them and compare results from different places. Which one do you feel most comfortable with? Go for it; ask as many questions as you can, see how the different hosts differ in their answers. Try one; if it doesnt work out try another, its really easy to move around. Dont be afraid, youve got nothing to lose except the fear itself!

Elements Of Web Hosting

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 4:45 pm

When you first start out trying to get a site on the Internet everything seems so confusing. Obtuse acronyms flow freely through the ‘Beginner Friendly’ information sites and definitions can be hard to come across. The main reason for this is that the Internet and the process of getting a website online is really very simple, and once people get past the first stumbling steps they rarely remember the difficulty they once had, which leads to them being unable to understand the next wave of dot com newbies.

So let’s begin with defining some of the basic terms that are commonly thrown around when looking for a web host. You’ll quickly realize that computer geeks like using big words for simple concepts. What do you expect from a group of people that decided to call half a Byte a Nibble?

Web Host: These are the people that supply your website with somewhere to sit and be accessed from. They’re often a wealth of information, so when you’re trying to find your feet it will often be worthwhile to contact their tech support and get your questions answered. Because of this, it’s important to contact them BEFORE you sign up for any packages to ensure that you’ll receive a timely response. Just fire an email their way and see what happens.

Disk Space: This is the same as the space on your own PC’s hard drive. Web Hosts will allocate a certain amount of space to your website, usually in Megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). This determines how much you can store on your site.

Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be retrieved from your site within the bandwidth period. The bandwidth period is the length of time before your bandwidth gets reset once again, usually about a month. Bandwidth is measured in MB and GB, like disk space. Always find out the consequences of exceeding your allocated bandwidth before you purchase a hosting package.

Domain Name: The domain name is your personal identifier on the Internet. This is what gets typed into a web browser’s address bar to reach your site. Some hosting companies will offer a domain for free, while others will have the facilities to provide one for a minimal cost.

SQL (MySQL, SQL Server etc.): Structured Query Language. This is the language used to interact with databases. Chances are that if you don’t know about it when you start looking for web hosting, you’re not going to need to know about it for at least a little while longer.

HTTP: Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. Basically, how the Internet works. It is the protocol governing the transfer of web pages from one place to another.

HTML: Hyper Text Markup Language. This is (usually) what you’ll be using to make your website, whether directly or indirectly. Don’t be scared by the name, the ‘language’ is very easy to learn.

FTP: File Transfer Protocol. This is a method for sending pages and files from your home PC to a server. It is quite simple to use and your host will provide login information if this is the method that they use for file access. Typing FTP:// into My Computer on a windows box allows you to use FTP as if your server were a regular windows folder.

POP3: This is a common email ‘post box’ system. It is use to store emails for retrieval.

SMTP: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. A common protocol used to send emails.

The beginner will not really need to know too much about the above two email technologies. If they’re listed, good. It means you have email accounts with your website (i.e. the email name@yourdomain.com will reach you, somehow)

There are many ‘languages’ used to enhance websites, such as Java, Perl, ASP, .NET, PHP, etc. If you’re just starting out you should try to learn simple HTML first before you worry too much about these more advanced languages. In general they’re not too difficult to learn, but you’ll want a solid grounding before you tackle them.

The Internet is a wonderful source of knowledge, so whenever you want information just fire up your favourite search engine and type in your problem. The Internet is full of sites about the Internet, so the information you want shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Building professional websites takes a lot of time and skill, so many companies hire people to do it for them. If this is the situation that you’re in, talk to the designer you’re hiring about hosting, as they may have struck a deal with a webhost to provide clients with cheaper hosting packages. Also, the professional designer will know what features you’re going to need in a hosting plan.

The world of web hosting is not as complicated as people would like to make out. Just make sure you do a little bit of research before diving in and you’ll be less likely to get burned by a shifty ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ company. Check out the host’s rankings on a few Web Hosting Directories, do a search for reviews of the company, contact the support staff before signing up and enjoy the world opened by having your own online presence.

How To Get Hosting And Domains For Free July 6, 2008

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 7:35 am

Are you paying too much for your Domain names and Hosting?

I was before I started checking out things.

I was paying 30$ a year for a single .com Domain, and I didn’t even get good service, a free email account or any possibilities of controlling anything regarding my Domains my self.

Then I started checking out things and now I am actually paying nothing for my hosting!

How is that possible?

Well let me tell you how things work. You can get a .com Domain for as low 1.99$ if you for instance go to www.ShopA.name or many other places. But you will have to by something else to get it at that prize, because nobody is making any money at that prize, and they only sell it to you at that prize because you then hopefully will by your hosting there and stick around for several years. So in the long run they will make money on you. Remember THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH, so if you save money on your Domain you will have to give money for something else or every domain seller would be out of business very quickly.

Where you can save money and even make money is if you become a reseller of Domains. If you become a reseller of Domains you will by them at a wholesale prize that is lower than ay prize you can get anywhere else, plus you will be able to make money from selling to other people. That’s what I do.

Whenever I need a Domain name I by it from my self. A .com Domain cost me 7$, so you see selling it for 1.99$ means loosing money, so nobody is doing that unless they make money on something else. The best thing you can do is therefore to make money on your self, that way you get your Domains and Hosting as cheap as you can and you can with a little effort even make money by selling to other people.

Godaddy is the #1 registrar and they sell finished web shops for selling Domains. They use their sister company Wild West Domains to sell reseller plans. They provide 24/7 support for your costumers, so you don’t have to worry of anything. There are two different reseller plans the small cost 99$ and the big 199$, but here’s another scoop. Some people have chosen to become master resellers, selling reseller shops, and they are usually giving a discount, to win market shares. If you go to www.masterdomaine.com you can get the same Wild West products for 90$ and 179$.

So for only 90$ you can get all your hosting and Domains as cheap as possible and you will even make money at the same time selling to others!

That’s how Domains and Hosting became absolutely free for me.

What Exactly Is Virtual Web Hosting? July 5, 2008

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 11:33 am

So you have decided that you want to start a website, or even an e-commerce site. You have managed the site design, and have even purchased a domain name, but now what? You will never get any visitors to your site if it isnt accessible via the web. The only way to do that is by using a server. The server will maintain a permanent connection with the web and on the server will be stored all the information about your website. In effect, users will come onto the server access your website and then when they decide to move to another website they will access information from another server. So, the real question is, what type of server do you need?

For all individual users and most small e-commerce users, virtual web hosting is the way to go. The other option, having a dedicated server, means that you will actually go out and purchase a big and very expensive piece of hardware that will be used for your website alone. Virtual web hosting is, essentially, renting a small piece of someone elses server. Virtual web hosting which is also called shared hosting, because it usually means many different sites are all located on a single server, and is vastly more economical than owning and maintaining your own server. But beyond just economics, there are a great number of reasons to use virtual web hosting rather than dedicated hosting.

One primary reason is downtime. Running a server is often quite a bit more complex than running your own personal computer. There is a real need to stay on top of technological advancements, watch for usage spikes, and maintain adequate bandwidth access. A server is hardware that must stay in constant contact with the internet if people are to be able to access your site. As a result, trying to manage all of the aspects of a server, in order to ensure that the individuals are able to access your website all the time, can easily be a full time job. A job which, for most individuals and small companies, is simply unreasonable.

Consequently, the virtual web hosting industry has flourished. With easy to use interfaces, individuals who have no experience with internet hosting, or building their own website for that matter, are able to set up an account with a virtual web hosting company. These companies also often provide one stop shopping services such as email forwarding, data transfer, backup services for your website in case of a crash, technical support, and often your own set of email addresses specifically for your website.

All of these features are ultimately designed for one purpose, to make the process of putting up and managing a website a realistic possibility for individuals and small companies that would otherwise find the prospect of hiring a full time staff to maintain hosting impossible. The ease of use and the affordability of virtual web hosting have harnessed the power of economic collaboration to provide individuals and companies with a practical way to get and keep their site on the web.
