Web Hosts: Helping Us Navigate Through This Future TechnoWorld

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 7:32 pm

Computers, Internet, Web siteswhat do they all mean? Hey, youre probably not a technophobe, I mean you own a microwave right? Just push a few buttons and the food cooks itself-easy. Now, they tell you the best way to share information, have a business, and generally communicate in life, are on the Web. I dont know about you but for me the Web conjures up visions of a giant spider whose sole intention is to turn me into a tasty appetizer. Computers scare me. People say theyre the tool of the future, but I find them to be quite alien, especially compared to my lawnmower! All the technical jargon associated with these machines, its like you have to have a university degree in Information Technology just to turn one on.

The key to solving the riddle is just to go back in time. Not easy?! Think about our ancestors, the prehistoric cave-dwelling hairy folk. How did they get the job done each day? Tools Tools. A man had his stone axe to kill the wild beast; a woman had a basket to collect fruits and vegetables. Sounds a little sexist, but fortunately times have changed in a number of ways. In our modern society the main tool has become the computer and anyone can use it. In the old days a boys father would teach them how to throw the axe. These days Web Hosts exist to help people get acquainted with the Internet in much the same loving parental role. These companies provide knowledge and access to all the fundamental ways of taking part in using the space age super-tool. Ive heard that having knowledge about something is half the battle of getting a job done. Having a Web Host is like meeting your mentor, the wizard who shows you the simple way to navigate through this new techno-world.

If you are a small business, a major company, or just an individual looking to spread a message to the rest of the world, the Internet or World Wide Web is your necessary gate of entry. Communication through Web Sites and Email systems is your means to partaking in the new world. Whether you are searching for information, selling a product or idea, talking to friends, or just browsing through the shop of life, Web Hosts are here to help you make the journey as enjoyable as possible. No more scratching your head in befuddlement, now theres a star lighting the way through our fearful darkness.

Handling Your Email Addresses

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 7:32 am

–Company Email Addresses–

Web hosting companies should provide company email accounts for each person in your company. Email addresses should appear like this:

yourname@domain.com

lester@definiteweb.com

myname@companyname.com

–Web Mails–

Most websites work with web mails. Web-based email enable you to access email via a web browser such as Internet Explorer. You log into your email account via the Web to send and retrieve email. You are able to access your emails from anywhere in the world and it makes checking of emails convenient and portable. Web mails for your company will most probably be accessed at www.yourcompanyname.com/webmail

There are other forms of web mail options available such as Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail and Gmail.

–Email Forwarding–

Email forwarding allows you to have multiple email personalities. With email forwarding, you can setup aliases for other email accounts like

joe@mycompany.com forwarded to web-designs@definiteweb.com

joe@myothercompany.com forwarded to web-designs@definiteweb.com

joe@personalwebsite.com forwarded to web-designs@definiteweb.com

It makes tracking of emails easy; especially when you have multiple email accounts to check on.

–Mailing Lists–

It will be userful if you can send out emails to a large number of users. Start up with collecting opt-in email addresses from interested parties and send monthly promotions of your business products and services. Before long, your mailing list will be your another marketing channel of your business.

Your Website Is Ready Opinions On How To Choose Your ISP July 30, 2008

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 3:32 am

If you ask a friend or a group of people/companies with websites for a suggested ISP (Internet Service Provider), you will get as many recommendations as there are those replying. You may also hear horror stories about some of the hosts that others swear by. So, how in the world can you ever choose? In this article, I share my thoughts and opinions on ways to make a sensible choice, but with a happy and prosperous outcome free from disasters.

How do I choose? Price can vary from as little as $3.00 a month to more than $100 per month. (Warning: what follows are the opinions I have formed from my experiences with several different hosts!)

I check to see how long a company has been in business and what corporate backing and rating it receives. Some of the very new hosts may be great, but you dont want one that comes and goes quickly after you have paid for a year or two of hosting (I never sign up for more than one year at a time).

I make sure that the host offers an excellent statistics package. It is important to know all about your traffic, and especially important if you are designing for others. Their boards and bosses want to know how well the site is doing.

If it is a personal site that I use just for hosting sites on which I am working at the time, then I dont worry as much about the features, but I do want a site with excellent uptime.

And probably, for me, the most important feature is the amount and professionalism of the technical and customer support. I want to be able to reach a live, polite and knowledgeable person at 3 a.m. in the morning on the weekend, who will solve my problem with ease and pleasure (over a toll free line). Even though most of the hosting companies brag about this feature, many do not follow through to my satisfaction. The only way to find out is to try them.

There are a variety of reasons for choosing your ISP. Write down what is important to you and/or your website designer, and go from there. Happy Hunting!

Five Quick Ways To Determine One Hosting Company From Another July 27, 2008

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 7:32 am

These days, web hosting companies are popping up faster than dandelions. And just like those pesky weeds, they usually arent going to benefit your business at all. So how do you pick out one hosting company for another for that big Internet move? Below Ive provided you some quick ways to sift out the sheep from the wolves.

1.Traceable Testimonies - Many web hosting companies provide a testimony page. Good web hosting companies will actually link to the person who said what is posted. If there is no link, it is possible that the hosting company simply made up the testimony. You dont want to be involved with a company with questionable integrity.

2.Testing Quick Response Claims - Testing out the response of a web hosting company is easy: email them. They should provide an email address or at least a feedback form. Ask a simple question about their service, and see how fast they respond. Compare that with what they have advertised as their response time. See how they measure up.

3.Online Help or Ticketing System - Some hosting companies may even offer and online ticketing/helpdesk. While you may have to be a customer to actually use it, just the fact that it is available is a good sign.

4.Sense of Community Good web hosts still have problems. Honest web hosts will be open and (of course) quick to resolve them. Many hosting companies now offer online forums a place for their customers and potential customers to post questions, comments, testimonies, and complaints online. Really good hosting companies will not only answer these questions, but theyll supply educational posts that may answer similar future questions.

5.WHOIS Taking a quick visit over to www.whois.sc will reveal a lot of information about your web host. Besides giving you some technical information, youll also find out just how many websites are running on that server. Remember, more websites doesnt always equal better company. You certainly want to make sure the server isnt bogged down!

This is a good place to also make sure that the host isnt on any blacklists. Blacklists usually mean that there are documented reports of spam coming FROM that server, and thats not good at all!

Whether you are a first-time hosting purchaser or a hosting refugee (thats what I call those people who bought hosting from a fly-by-night hosting company, and their website is now AWOL), I hope that these tips will help you save some future headaches and maybe even a little money, too.

Hosting Your Own Website! July 10, 2008

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 6:04 am

Did you want to own your own website or publish your personal web page?

Nearly everyone with an Internet connection possesses the ability to learn how they could easily do this. If you can use the internet and a computer, you can quickly and easily publish your own site on your own chosen hosting package.

Once you are familiar with the basics, you will soon have your own, site up and running on the net for all to see.

What do you need to make this happen?

First; you will need some storage space for your site, this will be located on a Web server. A Web server is like a normal computer, except this computer (server) is on continuously 24 hours a day. Most web hosts refer to this as uptime many now actually will give a guarantee of 99% uptime! Uptime is important, because if your web hosts server is not running then no one will be able to find your web site. By placing your site on your hosts server you can be certain that your site will be available to other Internet users or browsers of the web.

First a suitable host must be found.

That is not difficult; there is an enormous selection of web hosting companies that you can pay for, as well as lots of free offers of hosting on the Internet.

Lets start with the free hosts.

Some free hosts are listed here:- http://www.tripod.com/, http://www.freewebhosts.com/ http://www.webhosts4free.com/

The only problem with using these types of hosting services is that you have to enter such a long name in the web browser before anyone can find your site. Not everyone wants to enter a long URL to find you. With this type of hosting you dont have your own domain name; it is just added on to their domain name! Not easy for people to find or remember your site name.

There is another type of free hosting.

Web hosts like http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ or http://www.uk2.net/ will let you buy your domain name from them, and they will host it for free! The catch here is that they will put banners on your site to advertise their services. You do not have any control over what they place on your site as far as their advertising goes.

I would say that if you can afford it, you should have your own web host, free hosting services are alright for hobby sites, but if you want to be taken seriously or even to earn some money from your web site then you do really need to pay for hosting. By paying for hosting you usually get better service, faster load times, MYSQL data bases, PHP, CGI, Perl support and much more besides. The monthly fees are not too expensive and for only 7.00$ per month you can get a really good package.

There are so many paid hosting companies that it is difficult to recommend one above the other. Hosts offer different packages as standard and some will let you choose which services you want as add on. If you like a package that you see offered by a hosting service, it pays dividends to check them out. Try emailing their customer services, do you get a reply? Do they have a forum for their customers to ask questions? Do they have a telephone number you can phone them on if things go wrong? Do they actually do technical support and will they support you if you get things wrong. Google is always handy here. Type mychosenwebhostcompanyname complaints in the search box and see if there are any complaints about the company you are considering.

Do you need to buy your own domain name?

You should. Try and choose a name that is in line with the site you are going to have hosted. How to buy your domain name Top level Domains are names that end in (com, net, org). You can register this yourself nowadays at really favorable prices. Different Hosts offer this service, a popular one is http://www.godaddy.com/.

You can use their service to register your own .com Domain for as little as 8.95$. You will own that name then for 12 months. To keep it simple when you are starting out it is best to allow your web host to purchase your name for you and include it in the hosting package. If you host one place and buy your name from another, it can get complicated.

After you have registered your Domain name, and chosen your Web host, you will have Web space, to put up your site.

Designing your site.

Some hosting companies offer free site design software included in the cost of the hosting package. Most of these are basic. If all you want to do is a basic site then this may be ideal for you to use.

You will need to think about the design, layout, structure, and the contents of the site. Individual web pages make up the whole site.

You should think about the site as a whole, what will its purpose be? What will it contain, put it together so that not only you can follow it but your visitors will be able to quickly and easily navigate their way through your site. The homepage is really the most important page and should link to all the other pages of the site by means of a good navigation system.

At this design stage, make yourself notes, this is important and will make it easier for you to design your site.

Free Software you can use to put your site together.

For the design and construction of the web pages to make a site, there are lots of free HTML editors. Most web sites are made using HTML. One I would recommend is http://www.pspad.com/ you can download this and a lot of other programs free of charge from the Internet.

If you can use a keyboard and a mouse, then you should be then able to produce a simple web page, easily and quickly. One of the best tools for anyone starting out and you shouldnt be without one is an WYSIWYG editor, this type of program allows you to see the site or page in your browser and you can check how it is going to look on the web without actually putting it there.

Once you have built your site and added the contents, you should make sure that all the pages are linked together, this is referred to as Navigation, and most people are used to the navigation buttons being on the left hand side of the page. Your WYSIWYG program will have this feature built into it ready for you to use.

Some of the best web sites include a Sitemap; this lists all the pages available within the site. Usually this is all on one web page so you can clearly see the whole contents of the site you are looking at.

A sitemap plays an important role, not just for your visitors, but also for the search engines. I would recommend a good site map for this reason.

Naming your pages…

It is really important that the Home page of your site is named index htm or index HTML, this is the page that is shown to your visitors when they type you address into the search engines to find you. If its not there then your visitors wont be able to get to your site. You can name the other pages anything you like.

You have designed your site but how do you get it onto the web server?

You need to FTP (file transfer protocol) it up to your web space. With some hosts you can just upload using their system with others unfortunately you have to FTP. Again you can find may free ftp programs on the web if your host doesnt provide one. www.smartftp.com is an easy one to use. Just follow the instruction to connect to your web space, your host will have given you the correct details. Use the program, select all your files to be uploaded and GO, your site will be up on the web at the touch of a button. Job Finished.

If you have done everything right and put the files in the right directory you should be able to find your site on the Internet. Go to your browser, type in the domain name or website name and you should be taken directly to the home page we named index.htm Now go through your site yourself, test all the links using the navigation bar or buttons. You will now be seeing the site as it will appear to your visitors. If you get an error page or page not found, (404 page.) then you need to correct that bit of the site. If all you get is a 404 site not found message then you have uploaded your site to the wrong place on the server. You need to start again!

Good luck and get that site up there soon!

Is Dedicated Web Hosting The Right Choice For You? July 7, 2008

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 4:49 pm

If your website generates large volumes of traffic, a dedicated server is likely the best choice. Many web sites start by using a shared hosting plan but as they grow they need to scale their site to meet the added requirements. A dedicated server is the most effective way to do that.

Dedicated servers are used strictly for your website. There are no other sites sharing the resources on the machine. This lets you have ultimate control over the way the server is configured.

If you need more storage or more RAM, the hosting company can add that for you (at an added cost naturally). If you need to install a particular program or operating system, you can do that.

When looking for dedicated hosting services, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, ensure that you have a technical support and administration plan in place. This could be someone in your own company or the hosting company may provide these services for you.

Be sure the hosting company has planned for redundancy in case of system failures. If your server crashes, there needs to be a backup in place that can take on the load with minimal downtime for your website.

If your hosting company is managing the server for you, make sure they have a maintenance schedule in place for things such as security upgrades and operating system patches.

These kind of security updates are released on a regular basis, and you need to be sure that your web server is updated so it isn’t vulnerable to attack.

Web hosting companies are not all created equal. When choosing your hosting provider, you need to be sure that they are going to be able to keep your site up and running consistently.

If your website is large enough to justify a dedicated server, you can’t afford to have any downtime.

Why A Dedicated Server May Be Better

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 4:47 pm

Now, don’t get me wrong, I think shared and virtual server hosting is great. I have a virtual hosting account with a provider, and a standard shared hosting account on another. I have also had access to a dedicated server numerous times. But what’s all the fuss about dedicated servers?

Dedicated resources is a major reason. Not having to share any processing speed, any memory, hard drive capacity or network speed with anyone else (in other words, having it all entirely to yourself) sounds pretty good. Shared hosting accounts can sometimes go onto a server where there are hundreds if not thousands of other accounts. This isn’t a bad thing, but if someone is abusing the service, everyone suffers. If you also wanted to run a special application or internet service, chances are you wont be able to. With a dedicated server, you can.

Your own IP address. For the uninitiated out there, an IP address is like your server’s internet phone number. It is what other computers use to call your server and talk to it. If you wish to run an ecommerce store on your website, you will need an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer a layer of encryption for protecting your personal and credit card details when making a purchase online) certificate. But personalised (not shared!) SSL certificates require an IP address. Sure, it is possible to get an IP address for SSL on a shared hosting account, but usually it’s quicker and easier to do this on a dedicated server.

Dedicated servers normally cost a bit more than a shared hosting or virtual server account, but the benefits you receive in return far outweigh any disadvantages. You only have to decide if a dedicated server is really suitable for what you need (don’t buy it unless you need to!) and/or if you can afford to keep it. Make sure your dedicated server comes with a flexible contract, or short contract that only lasts a few months at a time. This allows you to take advantage of any discounts and price drops that your provider introduces that you may not be entitled to on your current contract. The downside to this situation is having to remotely back up all your data in the event that you decide to move your business elsewhere. Talk to your provider about flexibility and their ability to accommodate your changing needs over time.

But if you play it well, a dedicated server will be the best internet purchase you could make. Or it could be a waste. Stick by these few simple guidelines to decide if you need one before rushing in. When you are ready, it’ll be there waiting to serve you.

Choosing A Quality Web Host

Filed under: Articles — admin @ 4:46 pm

If you are anything like me, youd probably like to have a website on the Internet but you just have no idea how to go about it. All this talk of web hosting, bandwidth, disc space, and other jargon can cause one to say, This is too complicated and technical, I just wanted to have a place to put all of my favorite skateboarding photos, cool information on ramp designs, and the best places to skate! To get a website on the Web you have to go through a web host. The question is how do you find the web host for you? If you type web host into your search engine like Google you will get thousands of sites. Hit on one of these and like any product on the market you will see all sorts of persuasive propaganda to incite you to use their company; that is if you can decipher any of the technical jargon that only computer-heads can comprehend. Some web hosts offer free business cards with an account; some probably offer free watcheslike all consumer industries you the buyer must beware. Im a writer so Ill use the analogy of a writers journal. The journal I like must not be too big or small in book size. It also must have a good amount of space allocated to each day, again not a whole page but not just a few lines. Of course I also want it to be cheap but of a good quality that wont fall apart while Im using it, and I hope it would last for posterity. I just want the diary, some nice pictures in it are O.K. but unnecessary especially if it adds to the price. Its the same with a web host and web site scenario. You want to get the right deal for you, enough space and enough access to the public that you wish to associate with. As a novice who doesnt understand all the jargon this can pose a problem. Are you an individual, small business, blog, or a big time corporation? What do you need and how do you get it? As far as I can tell the web hosting business is a lot like the fast food business. The big corporations have strict guidelines, will offer you special deals, and have monthly cheeseburger specials. But, Ive always been more interested in the Mom and Pop small time diners who have that real caring human approach. You know you are a customer and a person, not just a number on a sales receipt. I believe the hosting companies are the same. A smaller hosting company will probably treat its users with more honest integrity as well as having more flexibility in dealing with your individual situation. They can often tailor web site packages to accommodate exactly what you are looking for as well as the ability to update them quickly when your needs change. My advice is to contact a few of the smaller companies. Look for ones with good reputations or just arbitrarily email them and compare results from different places. Which one do you feel most comfortable with? Go for it; ask as many questions as you can, see how the different hosts differ in their answers. Try one; if it doesnt work out try another, its really easy to move around. Dont be afraid, youve got nothing to lose except the fear itself!
